In the touristic perceptions Uruguay is a little in the shade of the big neighbor Argentina. But economical it‘s the wealthiest state in South America with the least corruption. I only got a short glimpse and although not one of my favorite countries it´s quite an atmospheric place.

Sorry LAN, having three rows according to seating makes sense to fasten the boarding process. Insisting that people use the right rows also makes sense. But putting everyone afterwards in the same bus to the plane is just STUPID!!! Again, using back and rear doors for boarding makes sense, not indicating which rows should use which doors creates chaos in the middle and is just STUPID!!! Final marks: concept 1, execution 6 (german school mark scale)
Maybe it was the mostly cold grey weather but walking around, the city could not really convince me. There are some nice colonial buildings, but many are run down reminding me a bit of Havanna, including the sea promenade running along a big road and flanked with big ugly house blocks. But whereas in Havanna it creates a lovely morbid charm, it does not work for me here. So at the end I will probably keep 3 nice/interesting experiences in mind. A wonderful anachronistic post market szene, Parillas with fantastic tender steaks and people of all age and gender, running around with thermos jugs and mate cups.
Oh my god!!! If you are vegetarian better skip this lines, because it‘s a hymn of praise about meat. Not just any meat but meat in Uruguay. I was wondering if this place can live up to its reputation about being the heaven for meat lovers. So when I arrived in Montevideo I asked in my hotel for a good parrilla (Steakhouse). I went to the place and ordered a beef fillet. Oh my god!!! It was perfect, exactly like a good peace of beef should taste like. No fancy preparation, just perfectly medium grilled, served with a pinch of salt, a piece of bacon and a grilled pepper on top. It was tender you could almost eat it with a fork, still wonderful juicy and tasted like a piece of heaven. Forget about the sites, not worth to talk about but the beef, hmmmm. Another nice place for eating is the old marked in Montevideo. It´s a bit touristy but the atmosphere is great. Just grab a chair at the counter and order what looks best on the grill.
My guidebook mentioned Colonia as the “ Superstar“ under the cities in Uruguay and even this is probably understated. Writing this text I‘m sitting outside a coffee bar in a cobbled square, listening to atmospheric live guitar music. The tables are covered with colorful table clothes, huge green trees spend shade and provide shelter for the many birds that even sing their songs middle in the day. The temperature is perfect, the scent of spring is all around. My view rambles over the many colonial buildings, a vintage car, two sleeping dogs in a corner, a couple passing by holding hands. I‘m ordering a mate tea, …ahhh YES, that is Colonia. Ok, ok, let me finish it honestly. I‘m ordering a mate tea, ..uahh, bähhhh….disgusting. My perfect day is spoiled. Now I will need an extra big, tender and juicy steak this afternoon to make me forget this 😉
This was one of the most amazing sunsets I´ve ever seen. A storm with darks clouds was approaching from the Argentinian site of the Rio de la Plata. On the horizon, the skyline of Buenos Aires appeared in the smog and then suddenly the sun dramatically came out under the clouds. What a spectacle. Shortly after the sun went down I had to run for cover as the storm finally arrived and it felt like mother earth decided to gift this last sunset before she ends the world.
